How to Stop Eating Sugar: 4 Foods to Eat Instead

When searching for information on how to stop eating sugar , there are a ton of tips out there. While giving up the sweet stuff entirely is no easy feat, here are the top four foods that will help you overcome your cravings and ultimately learn how to quit your sugar addiction. 1.     Meat : Unprocessed, lean meats including beef, chicken, lamb, turkey, and salmon are protein sources that will keep you satisfied and do not pack in added sugars. Beware of canned versions, or highly processed meats (including bacon) as they often use sugar in some form as a preservative. 2.     Veg Out: Non-starchy vegetables have marginal amounts of sugar, while starchy veggies like sweet potatoes contain a bit more. Healthy options include avocados, asparagus, beets, cauliflower, celery, eggplant, kale, turnips, and squash. 3.     Dairy Products: While dairy foods do contain a natural sugar source, lactose, dairy products are also high in protei...

No-Sugar Diets: The Fast Track to Better Health

Observing a strict no-sugar diet puts you on the fast track to better health. Not only will you shed some unwanted pounds, but you will also reduce your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems. However, going completely sugar-free is easier said than done — especially when you begin craving sweets . Cutting sugar doesn’t mean simply cutting cookies, cakes, brownies, and other sugar-laden foods, it also means cutting sugar sources thought to be more natural. These include agave, molasses, and honey. A true no-sugar diet will turn you into somewhat of a detective when reading the labels on the foods you choose to buy. Beware of any ingredient ending in “-ose” as it can be a type of sugar ‘hiding’ in the product. Passing on foods containing white flour is also a good way to avoid excess sugar. Foods like pasta, white bread, white rice, and crackers are digested quickly, absorbed into the bloodstream and can lead to spikes in blood sugar levels. Instead of wast...

How Well Do You Know Sugar?

When going through a quitting-sugar detox, it is important to distinguish between the two main types of sugar commonly found in the American diet. These are natural sugars, like those found in fruits and milk, and added sugars, like those in soft drinks, candy, cakes, pies and other processed foods. When reading labels, it is not always easy to distinguish between the two sugars as there is not typically a line broken out for added sugars. If the ingredients list shows milk or fruit, you can determine the product contains some natural sugars, just not the exact amount if the product also contains added sugars. The differentiation is important especially when discussing a sugar-free diet. To some, a sugar-free diet means cutting out even natural sources of sugar, while to others it means simply cutting out added sugars. Whichever way you choose to approach your quitting-sugar detox, cutting back your sugar intake has definite health benefits.  If you are unsure how t...

Added Sugars: Adding to Your Risk of Heart Disease

When you try to quit sugar, addiction to the sweet stuff can make the task feel overwhelming. It is even more difficult when you see that sugar is found in the majority of foods at the grocery store. Whether sugar is listed plainly on the label or hidden in some other form, the number of calories consumed from added sugar on a daily basis should be something paid attention to whether you are trying to quit sugar entirely or just watch your consumed amount. A study published in 2014 JAMA: Internal Medicine found that people who consumed 17-21% of their daily calories from added sugar sources had a 38% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease than those who consumed 8% or less of calories from added sugar. That risk doubled for those who consumed more than 21% of daily calories from added sugars. The American Heart Association’s chairperson, Rachel Johnson, said sugary snacks and drinks have long been linked to high cholesterol and blood pressure as well as obesity, but thi...

New Study Shows Benefits of Cutting Back on Sugar

We all know we should be cutting back on sugar, but did you know that small cuts can benefit your body in as little as ten days? According to a recent study performed by a team of nutritionists at the University of California, San Francisco, children who reduced their dietary sugar intake from 28% to 10% on a daily basis experienced significant health improvements in just ten days. Notable improvements included a 5 points overall drop in LDL cholesterol levels, an average of 33 points drop in triglyceride levels, and drops in diastolic blood pressure. Along with these changes, all children decreased their risk for diabetes and normalized their blood sugar and insulin levels. Even though this study was performed with children, the results should be similar with people of any age who cut back their sugar intake to 10% of their daily calories. This dietary change doesn’t require switching entirely to a no-sugar diet , or even learning how to overcome sugar cravings.  Dr. Rob...

Quitting-Sugar Detox Begins with Knowing the Facts

Anyone who has learned how to stop sugar cravings knows that the process begins with learning how to read labels and understand the different names of hidden sugars. One of the best ways to begin a quitting-sugar detox is to start eliminating the sugary drinks from your diet. A recent study published in the journal Circulation suggests that consumption of sugary drinks may lead to 184,000 adult deaths on an annual basis worldwide. According to the same study, some of your favorite sugary beverages contain more sugar than the leading high-sugar snacks. ●      One 20oz bottle of Coca-Cola contains as much sugar as 5 Little Debbie Swiss Rolls (65 grams) ●      One 16oz bottle of Sunny D is the same as eating 6 Oreo cookies (28 grams) ●      Consuming a 23oz can of Arizona Green Tea with Ginseng and Honey is the same as snacking on 20 Hershey’s kisses (51 grams) ●      Drinking a 160z can ...
